Details

If I attempt to use dash (debian recomended) as my default shell,
most of the helper scripts fail.

Analysis:
Since dash does not read any configs (at least in user home) at non interactive startup, none of XDG variables set at the execution time.

As result scripts are not working.

if using uzbl-browser they will be set to the defaults if not already defined so that should not be a problem.
I'm not sure to what extent we want to support the example scripts without uzbl-browser
